Competences Framework

Link to Endorsed Training Scheme

The IAM Competences Framework (‘the Framework’) describes what people working in asset management should be able to do and indicates what they ought to know and understand.  See the Brochure for more details (right hand column).

It is a tool that organisations, managers and individuals can use in numerous ways including in Training Needs Analysis, Recruitment and Selection, Career Planning, Continuing Professional Development and Workforce Management.  It is the first and only Framework of its kind.

The Framework contains a unified set of generic competence requirements which are applicable to all organisations and sectors where business performance relies on optimising the delivery and performance of physical assets.  Its structure is compatible with that of other leading competence frameworks and its contents reflect the principles and support the requirements of BSI PAS 55:2008.

The Framework is freely available to download from here

The Framework will be subject to incremental change using feedback collected from new and existing users of it.  If you have any comments on any aspect of the Framework please let us know - Contact Us.

Frequently asked questions

Competences Framework

  1. Do I have to pay to use the Competences Framework?

No, as part of our Learned Society aims, the IAM is making the Competences Framework available to download and use free of charge. We ask Non-Members to provide their details so that we can send revised versions later and collect any feedback to improve the Framework.

  2. How does the Framework link to BSI PAS 55:2008?

PAS55 is a management systems framework. It details the processes and procedures that an organisation should have in place to ensure that they meet best practice Asset Management. The Competences Framework is one tool that can be used to help meet the requirements in PAS55. It has been designed to help both individuals and organisations.

  3. How does the Framework relate to other existing frameworks?

The content of the Competences Framework has links with a number of existing competence frameworks. For example, Unit 6.4 (Audit and review compliance with legal, regulatory, ethical and social requirements) of this Framework is clearly related to the Management Standards Centre (MSC) National Occupational Standards for Management and Leadership Unit B8 (Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, ethical and social requirements).

  4. I am using the previous version - what should I do?

We advise you to start to use the 2008 Framework, although this should not be too difficult. The main difference between the two sets of requirements is the structure rather than the content. There is a significant amount of overlap between the two versions. However, the 2008 version has been explicitly cross referenced to align with BSI PAS 55:2008 and, in this sense, is a better reflection of the IAM's current thinking about best practice Asset Management.

  5. Is the Framework linked to Key and Core Skills?

At this stage the Competences Framework is not explicitly linked to Key and Core Skills. If the Framework is developed further, and links to existing frameworks are strengthened, then allowance will need to be made to accredit Key and Core Skills.

  6. When will the Competence Framework next be updated?

It is intended that the Competences Framework will be continuously reviewed and updated. We welcome any feedback and comments from users. (Please see Contact Us if you do not already have specific contact details.)

  7. Where can I get more information?
