A large and growing number of organisations are using BSI PAS 55:2008 to gain business benefit from managing their assets more effectively.  You may be amongst them!

The IAM is constantly asked about usage and certification of compliance with PAS55 and we would be glad to demonstrate active interest and use by organisations, whether or not you have any interest in compliance, a certificate of compliance (or external assessment).  It is the IAM’s view that great benefit results from the structured and disciplined thinking and ‘line of sight’ from the organisations clear purpose and how they manage their assets.  This result is real whether or not the asset management system is certified as in place and being used.

Certification means 3rd Party assessment.  The IAM has already produced and published the PAS55 Assessment Methodology – and this is freely available to Members Free of Charge.  For many organisations this achieves what they need.

Some organisations also find it worthwhile to be assessed and certified as compliant with PAS55.  Often this is to demonstrate to stakeholders and/or shareholders that your organisation has achieved the results or is working towards them.  Again you may have achieved this or be working towards Certification.

However, currently there are no formal standards being followed for certification.  In fact, one of the reasons the IAM is introducing an Endorsed Assessment Scheme is that we are aware of a wide range of different levels of rigour and approach.  We may choose later on to allow the display of which organisations have been assessed by an Endorsed Assessor – but this will be consulted on before any change.


The Institute’s purpose is to gain some knowledge of where and how many and which types of organisations are ‘committed to using PAS 55 as a model to drive improved business performance’.  We hope that showing some of this publicly will encourage others to consider adopting PAS55 for similar reasons.
