ISO Decision to form Project Committee

International Standard moves a step closer

A positive ballot result means that ISO committee PC251 will now be formed to start developing an International Standard in Asset Management.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) committee will begin work on the new standard, using BSI PAS 55:2008 as the starting point.

The decision follows a worldwide ballot, which closed in November 2009, on the ‘new work item proposal’ that was circulated to National Standards Bodies around the world. ISO Technical Management Board (TMB) Resolution 196/2009 stated:

TECHNICAL MANAGEMENT BOARD RESOLUTION 196/2009
NWIP on Asset Management
The Technical Management Board noting the numerous comments submitted through the ballot regarding the new work item proposal for standards on asset management, which requested that the NWIP be registered as a preliminary project, requests that BSI (United Kingdom) organize a preliminary meeting and provide the TMB with a report and recommendations of the meeting.

An invitation has now been sent to the National Standards Bodies which expressed interest in participating in the process, for a preliminary meeting of PC 251 in London, on 26-29 April, 2010.  This was postponed owing to the effects of the volcano on air travel and took place on 15-18 June.

The result was a unanimous recommendation to proceed and the formal recommendation is available to download ISO Communique 25 June 2010.  The decision of the Technical Management Board is awaited.

BSI forms UK Mirror Committee

BSI is pleased to announce that the inaugural meeting of the UK committee responsible for Asset Management was held on 30th March. This Committee will provide input into the development of the three new International Standards Organization (ISO) standards on Asset Management - to be developed in ISO Project Committee 251:

1. Asset management - Overview, principles and terminology
2. Asset management - Requirements
3. Asset management - Guidelines on the application of the ISO standard

BSI hosted a half day meeting on Tuesday, 30th March starting at 10.30 in order for stakeholders to review the ISO new work item and the standardisation process.

Representation on the committee is sought from many spheres including: consumer organizations; professional institutions; certification, testing, and inspections bodies; educational establishments; research organizations; UK notified bodies; enforcement bodies and government departments. It should be noted that BSI technical committees have formal rules and procedures for their constitution and membership.

Anyone interested in attending the next meeting (probably 27th September 2010) should contact David Adamson, BSI Committee Manager (David.Adamson@BSIGroup.com). There is limited capacity such that places will need to be confirmed.
